Why Getting Started in Microstock Photography

I just recorded a short but important video on why you should get started in Microstock photography and it’s a real eye opener.

Microstock photography is much easier to begin with compared to traditional stock photography and is very rewarding for several reasons.

Here’s the 3 main reasons you should get started in microstock photography:

  1. Easy to get started
  2. Fun and rewarding
  3. Almost instant feedback

Just watch the video and let me know what you think. Good or bad comments to the video, please make a comment below.

Images That Sell

Recently I released a few training videos showing you how to spot the ideal markets for your stock photography. I pointed out it’s recommended that you study what sells and I’d wish to complement these training videos in this directory of web sites where you can find hot selling pictures.

On top of that it’s wise to examine the top searches to see what’s sought after.

Here’s links to the video lessons i mentioned about.

So always keep studying hot selling markets and pictures carefully. Then you decide on your market and first later you start snapping photos for this market. Don’t conduct the big mistake to first snap photos and after that try to look for a market, imagine if you find out there are no markets for your pictures.

How To Sell Pictures Online – Episode 2

Did you see the previous video tutorial i released a few days ago?

Interesting and valuable right?

In this video i’ll follow up and show you real world examples how you can find competition and demand for microstock or traditional stock photography. A super easy and somewhat sneaky way to find what kind of niches and images that sell.

If you haven’t already done so, please watch How To Sell Pictures Online – Episode 1 before watching this video.

Note: If you get a number of niches with the same or similar scoring you may pick the niche that has the most downloads (or searches if this information is available).

I personally use a slightly modified formula compared to one used in the video. The formula i personally use is included in a premium product I sell so I can’t give this formula to you or my customers would be  very upset. Hope you understand…

Popularity of Microstock Photography

Microstock photography has grown dramatically during the last few years and not without controversy. Many traditional stock photographers has cursed microstock photography for undercutting prices now when you can buy an image for under a dollar.

Why has microstock photography become so popular?

I think it’s because it enabled the hobby photographer to enter the scene without having a massive portfolio of images and expensive equipment.

Here’s the main advantages with microstock photography seen from a hobby photographer.

Inexpensive equipment

You can use fairly inexpensive entry level camera equipment and still sell your images through microstock agencies.

Easy submission requirements

The submission requirements are fairly easy compared to many traditional stock agencies, especially the high end stock agencies.

Fast results

In traditional stock photography it takes months or even years to see any noticeable results as it can take a long time before your first sale. In microstock photography you can see almost instant result because of the low price and frequent sales.

Fast feedback

Microstock photography also give you a chance to quickly see if the images you submit are sellable because of the cheap price and frequent sales.  You can quickly analyze the result and change the type of images you submit based on the result.

Now to the question, should you sell through microstock agencies or through traditional stock agencies?

My answer is: BOTH!

I don’t see any reasons to limit your market reach by only selling through one or the other. I market my images through both microstock agencies and traditional stock agencies without any issues.

Increase your market reach and submit your images to as many agencies as is practical and your sales will increase.

STEP #11: Submit your images to microstock agencies

You’re now ready to submit your first images! This is a big step and a very important milestone for you.

I hope you realize the magnitude of what you learned in the previous steps and I will summarize the key points to make sure you remember them.

Step 1-4: You identified a market with hungry desperate buyers and limited competition. You hopefully also selected a market you’re passionate about but that’s optional (but it certainly helps to keep the motivation up).

Step 5-6: You shortlisted a number of stock agencies and prioritized them based on some important criteria’s to maximize your success.

Step 7-9: You selected your best images based on technical quality and how useful they are commercially. You also saved your own ass by removing images with potentially legal issues.

Step 10: You tagged all your images with relevant keywords to make sure your images are found by the photo buyers when they search the database.

If you follow these steps you’re miles ahead of your competition and you can literally run circles around them. They will have no clue what hit them when you enter the market, all they will know is that you crushed them.

Now it’s time to submit your images. Most agencies nowadays support digital upload via the Internet but some “anti technology” agencies might still require you to submit CD’s or DVD’s. They are relatively few though so I’ll assume they accept that you upload your images over the Internet.

Make a final check to make sure you upload the right images and use the upload interface the agency provide. It’s usually self explanatory how to do it so I won’t bother you with too many details here.

After you bumbled through the previous steps a number of times you’ll realize you need one extremely important tool to save time and reduce frustrations to a minimum.
